Why Ship Direct to Doorstep?
Imagine being able to have access to some of the freshest seafood fresh off the boat at your doorstep every single week. No, you do not have to wake up at the crack of dawn to meet the ships when they come in, and nor do you need to have an in at the local distributor. Instead, you can access to fresh delicious ethically sourced seafood with 7 Seas Fish Market (aka. Seven Seas Fish Market).
With access to some of the best seafood on either coast, 7 Seas Fish Market provides you with the opportunity to enjoy fresh seafood every single week. However, before we jump into why shipping seafood to your doorstep the best choice is, let's go back a little and see what the traditional way to get your seafood is.
Traditional Ways to get your seafood
Off the boat
For some of us in this country, we are lucky enough to live on one of the coasts and have access to the ocean every single day. For those of you on the East Coast, you might be able to go down to St. Margaret's Bay in Nova Scotia and chat with your local lobster fisherman and buy off the back of the boat. While on the West Coast, you may be able to head down to Steveston, British Columbia and chat with a trawler to get that fresh Pacific salmon right out of the water. However, these days, gaining access to a vessel, let alone buying off the boat is becoming rare.
Buying off the boat was the norm for those who are lucky enough to be located on the coast and near a fishing fleet, but today, it has become a little tougher. Most vessels who head out to sea have rigid and stiff contracts to deliver x number of pounds to their distributor. Thus, vessels are not focused on providing fish or seafood to locals, but rather, to their larger distributors who are paying top dollar for their product. Consider this, during the west coast prawn season; vessels can freeze and sell their product to South East Asia for $16 per prawn, while off the boat, they are only able to charge $4 per prawn. Economics has ruined selling off the boat mentality in the industry, and if you have a guy you still buy off of, you are very much in the minority!
Farmers Market
No matter if you are on the coasts or are landlocked, every community has a farmer's market. These markets are often the lifeblood of the local community, and from meat stands to the local farm, these markets provide an excellent opportunity to try some of the local produce and enjoy fresh meat. Over the last few years, we have seen that the seafood industry also embraces the farmers market opportunities. From Ottawa to Calgary to Portland, chances are your local farmers market has some seafood options.
However, as hard as these local suppliers are working, they struggle to bring in fresh seafood that delivers the pack and punch of some of the larger distributors. The reason for this is that there is only so much product on the market, and smaller companies have access to only a tiny fraction of the available fish and shellfish. As well, if you are landlocked, this fresh seafood may take a couple of days to get to the distributor, and by the time that you go to your Sunday farmers market, it might not be so fresh anymore. You know that seafood smell that you might have smelt in the farmers market, fun fact, that is from not fresh seafood!
Fishmonger
For those lucky enough to be in the know, a local fishmonger can be your source from the fishermen to your table. Although there are exceptions, most fishmongers are a local shop with connections to some of the larger distributors in the country. From sourcing scallops on the East Coast to fresh Pacific salmon from the West Coast, fishmongers can be your conduit to the sea.
Fishmongers are an excellent source for seafood, and no matter if you have some questions on how to prepare the fish, or want the freshest seafood that just came in, these stores are great. However, depending on your location, these shops might not have the freshest seafood available. They try their best, but shipping seafood is an art, and for many, the seafood can struggle to stay fresh during the journey from the hold to the store. As well, as this is a store, they are going to try and push older seafood out the door, so unless you know the store well, you might not be getting the freshest catch of the day. Fishmongers are a great source if you only have a supermarket as your other option, but they can only do so much, especially if you are in-land.
Grocery Store
Today's shopping experience in North American has moved away from the stop at the baker, the butcher, the fishmonger and the produce stand. Instead, we can go to all these shops in one place at the grocery store. Grocery stores are great, in that they save you time, and provide you with a wide selection of brands and items all in one simple to shop spot. From your local chain to the national chain, grocery stores are the most common way in which you have access to fresh seafood in the country.
However, grocery stores are not the ideal place to get your seafood from. Think about it this way: do you think that your groceries go directly from the supplier to your grocery store? They might if you are ordering and shopping from an independent store, but for the bigger chains, they do not, which means that your fish will ship from the supplier to the warehouse, where it will be put on another truck to your store. This extra step can add a day or even three to the supply chain, which means their fresh fish is already a couple of days old if you are lucky. Grocery stores are the norm, but for your seafood, you can do a lot better.
What if we told you, there is a way to get fresh seafood without the need to even step foot outside of your door? Well, the time is now, and with 7 Seas Fish Market, your catch of the day is sent directly to your door every single week. Let's take a look at why 7 Seas Fish Market is a little different than the traditional ways in which you bought your seafood before, and why it can change the way we think of fresh seafood.
